This lava is called a “ropy” sheet flow. As a lava flows rapidly on the seafloor, its top layer cools and hardens like taffy while the inside is still moving. The moving lava pulls against the gooey top, causing all kinds of wrinkles and folds to form. Sometimes, they look like coils of rope.
