Rick Koppel, one of Melville’s oilers, stands the “winch watch” during dredging operations this afternoon. He has to operate the winch and let wire out or pull it in. There are 11,000 meters of steel wire on the large winch drum that is below deck. He uses the TV monitor that you see behind him to keep a close eye on the winch drum to make sure that the wire spools off correctly and doesn’t get tangled.
