Ron Comer adjusts the recorder for the “Bite-O-Meter”, or tensiometer. This device tells us how much tension is on the dredge wire. When the dredge is being dragged across the seafloor, “bites”, or increased tension, on the meter indicates that the dredge might be breaking off pieces of lava. We like to see many “bites” while dredging! The recorder under the “Bite-O-Meter” plots the “bites” during each dredging operation.
