One of the small samples of volcanic glass recovered from about 3060 meters water depth on the East Pacific Rise axis near 3° 23.30’N and 102° 14.36’W. Note the very shiny surface of the lava. This forms when hot, molten rock is quenched (very rapidly chilled) when it comes in contact with the near-freezing seawater.
