Scientists launch the CTD over the side then
lower it to the seafloor in search of hydrothermal vent signals. The ship-bound
scientists continuously monitor the CTD’s data. When they see a signal,
the scientists send an electrical pulse down the cable. This closes one
of the gray bottles above the CTD, collecting a water sample from the hydrothermal
plume.
