Alvin is lowered on a thick Kevlar rope into the water. You can see the basket of Alvin loaded with sampling equipment. The two manipulator arms are pulled up out of the way so the pilot can see the basket to make sure nothing falls out when Alvin enters the water. The curved metal piece on the front of the basket is the ski. It prevents Alvin’s basket from getting caught when working on the seafloor.
