Today we collected samples using a rock core.
This sampling device basically involved bashing a heavy steel pipe
into the lava on the seafloor. Samples of the chipped volcanic glass
are recovered in small metal cups that contain surfboard wax. When
the core hits the ocean floor bits of rock, glass, and sediment
stick in the wax. Here Denny Geist lends a helping hand as Gene
Pillard, the Res. Tech., directs the recovery.
