A new 3-dimensional image of the multibeam bathymetry
data that Uta Peckman has compiled from our survey. She has added
two new swaths of data -- one on each side of the Galapagos Rift
valley in the center -- to the image presented in slide 3 of the
April 25th slide show. The color bar on the bottom of the image
shows the depth in meters. You can see that the rift valley floor
(the purple and blue colored area in the center of the image) is
much deeper (by about 1000 meters) than the walls. The stair step-like
structure of the rift valley walls is caused by faults. We are about
half-way through our DSL-120 sonar survey of the rift valley floor.
Over the next few days, we will post some of the sonar images from
that area.
