PJ Bernard at work in the WHOI Shop Van. The Van is a container usually used on ships to hold cargo, that has been transformed into a working space. The Van holds many of the spare parts and supplies that the WHOI technicians need to make repairs to their equipment. All the basic tools are stored in the blue cabinets beneath the workbench. The plastic trays by PJ’s head contain small mechanical fasteners, spare parts, electrical connectors, and other items. They are all numbered and cross referenced to lists of parts that are constantly updated. That way, when the cruise is over, the Van can be resupplied easily.
