These students don’t look very busy while they are on watch in the
Control Van! Clare Williams (foreground), Tim Head (middle) and Tim Haskell
take a break while the ship turns around to start a new survey line. It takes
about two hours, and lots of skill and patience, to turn the ship around while
towing a piece of equipment on a 3500 meter-long fiber optic cable. Once back
on course, these watch standers will again be busy making observations and
keeping track that the data are being recorded correctly.
