Microbiologist Jim Holden of the University of
Massachusetts replaces flow regulators he had removed from gas tanks
in his lab when the ship rocked in high seas Friday. Though the tanks
are secured to tables, capping helps prevent an explosion if they tip.
He uses the nitrogen and carbon dioxide gases to feed microbes collected
from hydrothermal vents.
