Protective earmuffs are standard issue for working in the engine room of Atlantis. Oiler Mike Spruill has been working on Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution research vessels since February 2002. He’s often in the noisy engine room assisting engineers. “I wear them all the time,” he said of the earmuffs. “So sometimes I just forget they are up there.”
