A photomicrograph (1000 times magnification) of stained bacterial cells. These were isolated from a sample “slurped” from around a clump of mussels. The long strand is a spirochete—a bacterium that moves in a corkscrew motion. The bright dots are also bacteria; however, they cannot be identified without the use of molecular techniques.
