A rock collected in yesterday’s dredge looks
like it has ropes on its surface. Called ropy lava, this rock still
retains the original shape of the fast-moving lava surface when
it was erupted. The dull gray coating on the surface is a manganese
oxide that tells us the rock is old - new rock is covered in shiny
volcanic glass.
