Dan Fornari (left) and Ben Wigham insert the cutters into the head of “Mighty Mo”, the wax corer. The yellow stuff on the tips of the cutters is surfboard wax. When “Mighty Mo” hits the lava surface, chips of the glassy rind get stuck in the wax.
