Imagine a U-shaped piece of cast steel that has a bolt joining the two sides of the “U”. In this picture, the bolt of the shackle is through the dredge and the chain is hooked into the bend of the upside down “U”. Shackles are a common fastener used on ships. They come in many different sizes and strengths. Because the bolt opens, shackles can be used to connect many different sizes and shapes of lines and equipment.
