A close-up of a fresh, glassy basalt exterior. The rocks dredged today are some of the youngest ones seen on this expedition. Some of the glass has an iridescent surface -- a characteristic of newly erupted seafloor lava. The bold scale lines at the upper left corner are 1 centimeter apart.
