Some of the wave cut cliffs in Tagus Cove were used by pirates and whaling ships several hundred years ago as shelters. The layers in the rock cliff are made by tephra, or volcanic ash, which is deposited when lava flows reach the shoreline and the hot lava causes the water to flash to steam. This creates explosions which shatter the lava and form the fine ash layers.
