It’s hard to believe that these cute little Galapagos tortoises grow up to be so large! These baby tortoises are a few months old, and are being bred in captivity to help re-populate some of the islands where the natural population of tortoises was near a critical point of going extinct. The success rate of this program is over 80%, and many of the islands have been successfully re-populated with the native tortoises. But there are still many problems that have to be overcome in helping to stabilize some of the plant and animal ecologies in the Galapagos Islands. The Darwin Research Station and Galapagos National Park are working hard to educate people about these problems and to solve them.
