The Darwin Research Station has a large program concerning the ecology and preservation of Galapagos tortoises. They maintain a breeding program to help stabilize endangered populations of tortoises on some of the islands, and promote education and conservation. Here, Maya Tolstoy watches one of the tortoises eat. We were told that these tortoises can go without food or water for up to a year! They are well adapted to the harsh, dry and vegetation-poor environment on young volcanic islands like the Galapagos.
