Blue-footed boobies are a common sight in the Galapagos Islands. They are
well adapted to living on young volcanic islands because they do not need
vegetation to survive. They fish for their food by diving into the water from
heights of 50 feet or more. They have a special air sac in their skulls to
help cushion the shock when they hit the water. Blue-footed boobies lay their
eggs on bare rock and incubate them on top of their blue webbed feet, so they
need no nesting materials.
