Today in the library on board RV Melville, Mike Perfit (left), Maya Tolstoy
(right), Ben Wigham (center) and some other students studied the sonar records
that we collected last night with the DSL-120 sonar. They were deciding how
to plan the rest of the sonar surveys and where to take the first rock dredge
samples tomorrow night. The rolled-out sonar strip spans about 20 nautical
miles (nearly 40 kilometers) of the East Pacific Rise crest and covers a swath
about 1 kilometer wide.
