Question: I was wondering what you do for
entertainment on the ship ? Do you have TV? Radio ? Do you
play cards or listen to music? It surely can’t be all
study? Also, living in such proximity to one another, do you
get on each others nerves? Is the captain a scientist too ?

Thanks for your questions and for viewing our web site. Here
are my replies:
- For entertainment we have lots of
different video movies we can watch. People also listen to music, read
a lot, play cards and generally talk with each other. It is a great opportunity
to get to know different people. We do have short-wave radios,
but no TV out here in the middle of the ocean as we don’t
have a TV satellite antenna.
Most of the time we are working in 3 shifts of 8 hours each,
24 hours a day, as our time out here is precious and expensive,
so we need to make the most of it. But we do try to relax a bit
so that we don’t get too stressed.
Sometimes, especially at the end of a long cruise, people’s
nerves and patience can get a bit frayed. But generally everyone
does very well and copes because we are doing interesting
work and people WANT to be here. It is a real adventure.
- The captain is not a scientist. He has gone to university
to study various marine techniques and shiphandling, and has
also taken courses in various types of science, oceanography,
meteorology, etc. The captain on this cruise, Capt. Eric Buck,
is a veteran of many oceanographic expeditions and has considerable
experience in this branch of science.
