Today Alvin carried a glass “planet” made by artist Josh Simpson in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Geologist Dan Fornari is a friend of the artist, and has placed these grapefruit-size balls at hydrothermal vents in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. Josh said he thinks of the balls as artifacts that could be left for future generations to find. (Photo by Dan Fornari)
