The ‘core catcher’ and the sample
collected in the nose cone of the sediment corer. The core catcher
(the thing with the shiny metal fingers) is placed at the base of
the corer and allows sediment to enter but not to exit. In this
case there was a hard layer of volcanic gravel that stopped the
corer from going very far into the sediment. We did recover a nice
sample of the surface sediments and some volcanic glass.
