Members of the Deep Submergence Operations Group lower Jason and other vehicles to the seafloor using the fiber optic cable on this winch drum. Stretched out, the cable measures six miles. The cable sends electricity down to the ROV for controlling lights, computers and all other electronics on the vehicle. It also transmits data back to the control van on Knorr.
