Dave Murline hoists the “Day Shapes”. The shapes and sequence of “ball, diamond, ball” are hoisted when we are towing equipment at slow speeds and cannot maneuver very well. It signals to nearby ships that we have a “restriction in ability to maneuver”. When any vessel is displaying these shapes, nearby ships stay well away from it and give it the right of way. At night, the shapes are replaced by a “red, white, red” sequence of lights that means the same. One of the satellite antennas domes is behind Dave.
