Dr. Dana Yoerger gives the afternoon talk on his
research with the ABE (Autonomous Benthic Explorer). ABE is an autonomous
robot, meaning that it is put in the water and is pre-programmed
to go and do detailed surveys on the ocean floor, without any tether
to the surface or people inside. ABE represents the wave of the
future in deep submergence technologies. Dana and his colleagues
at Woods Hole Oceanographic, Dr. Al Bradley and Mr. Barrie Walden,
are working on the next generation of ABE which they plan to have
ready by next year.
