He does so by studying the bacteria's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid-the essential building blocks of life). He also uses these molecular techniques to research how bacterial communities interact in extreme environments. He is also studying how the symbiotic bacteria that live in larger organisms such as tubeworms (Riftia) are passed on to the offspring of these animals. Read his interview »
	Dr. George W. Luther, III, Principal Investigator Professor of Chemical Oceanography University of Delaware Dr. Luther's interests center around chemical interactions in the marine environment. On the Guaymas cruise, he will use electrochemical sensors to measure hydrogen sulfide and iron monosulfide concentrations near and at hydrothermal vents. The measurement of these two chemicals indicates that pyrite (fool's gold) and hydrogen gas are being formed. The hydrogen gas is a useful chemical that life forms such as Archaea, which are descendants of ancient life, can use for growth. He and his colleagues then will use this information to prospect for, or discover, life forms that can live off the reaction between hydrogen sulfide and iron monosulfide. Read his interview »
	Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Principal Investigator Assistant Professor of Microbiology Portland State University Dr. Reysenbach is a microbial ecologist. She is especially interested in the ecology of terrestrial and deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Her research interests are two fold. She and her lab are investigating the ecology of some of the earliest evolutionary lineages of bacteria and Archaea. They are also trying to determine whether pyrite formation at deep-sea hydrothermal vents can provide the necessary energy to sustain the microbes living around the vents. Read her interview »
