June 2, 2005 Hi All, My name is Aimee and I am taking an oceanography class in Roseburg, Oregon. Our professor asked us to follow this expedition and write a report on the findings. Here's my question: What is the most important device you are using to gather information? I know it is probably going to be Alvin, but let's leave him out of this. Why is this device important? I wanted you all to know this is really such important and special work. Good for you all and I wish you a safe voyage. Plus, you have several students from Umpqua Community College watching your expedition. Aimee Hello Aimee, Thanks for the question—glad you are following the cruise! Which instrument is considered most important depends on whom you ask! However, I am going to suggest that the temperature probe is of great importance to every scientist on the cruise. Whether you are a geologist, geochemist or biologist, the temperature of the hydrothermal fluids is very important to know for the following reasons: 1) For geologists, the temperature of the fluids helps determine what minerals will precipitate out when the fluid mixes with seawater. 2) For geochemists, temperature is critical in understanding the chemical reactions that take place between volcanic rocks and seawater 3) For biologists, temperature provides an idea as to the conditions different organisms can tolerate in their living environment.
