Chemist David Butterfield of the University of
Washington uses a pipette for analysis of dissolved silica. In diffuse
environments at hydrothermal vents, where hot water from vents mixes
with the cold surrounding seawater, measuring silica helps to determine
the amount of mixing that takes place.
