Jose Andrade grew up on the coast of Cape Verde
off Africa. At age 19, he began working on cargo ships in Portugal, and
in 1985 moved to the United States, followed by his three sisters and
seven brothers. In November he joined the crew of Atlantis as an ordinary
seaman. Jose helps maintain and clean the vessel.
