Since Alvin dives occupy ship and crew time during
the day, researchers work at night to prepare for the next morning’s
dive. Several graduate students were up all night preparing this 9-foot-tall
instrument, called a CTD, which measures conductivity (to determine salinity
of the water), temperature, and depth. It is a workhorse for many oceanographers.
