Hello, I am a student working in a 10th grade biology class and recently we studied hydrothermal vents and life of the deep sea. This type of adventure has always seemed interesting to me so I have formed one question. Give me a brief description of what your emotions are when in the submarine just before the dive starts. Are you scared, excited, skeptical? Just email me your response back. Thank you.
Deb Glickson responds:
I’ve only been on two dives, so I’m still new at diving in Alvin. Both times, I’ve been excited but a little worried. Excited, because I’m getting a chance to see absolutely unique environments that haven’t been fully explored yet and always have the possibility for new discoveries.
Plus, it’s cool to think that I’m working on the sea floor, a place that most people don’t have the opportunity to visit.
Worried, because a lot is riding on each dive and I don’t want to be responsible for messing something up. We have a lot of research projects that each scientist wants to accomplish, and one of our tasks as divers is to accomplish as many of the goals of the dive as possible.
Does “tired” count as an emotion? That’s how I feel right now, 3 hours after my dive ended. It’s hard work to concentrate on everything for 4-5 hours straight, especially when I had a hard time sleeping last night (the excitement kept me awake!).
