We got over 1,000 separate Desmophyllum cristagalli samples today, bringing the total to 2,000. Here scientist Matt Jackson helps with the long and complicated task of sorting them. After they're sorted, their black volcanic manganese crust must be scraped off. Each piece of coral gets a separate box that is labeled according to dive, seamount and depth. The bulk of the analysis will go on back in the laboratory in California.
