Scientist Rhian Waller prepares the conductivity,
temperature, depth apparatus, or CTD, for deployment. The CTD can calculate
water density from those three parameters. (Conductivity is essentially
salinity, or how salty the water is; density is calculated using temperature
and salinity). The CTD is also useful for measuring changing water currents
above and around the seamounts.
