WHOI scientist Al Duester prepares a transponder
for launch. The transponder, housed inside a ball of glass, is then covered
in a yellow flotation device. We sent out several of these today. They
allow us to locate Alvin’s position on the seafloor, by calculating
how much time it takes a sound to travel from Alvin to the transponders
and back.
