This illustration comes from the report of the HMS Challenger Expedition (1872 to 1876), the first cruise organized specifically to gather oceanographic data. For many years, sailors feared sharks. Even though we now recognize that sharks are important members of the oceanic food chain, in some places of the world they are over-fished.
