A close-up photo of the “monster” pillow. We needed sledgehammers
and chisels to break off some pieces so that we could sample glass from the
outer crust and chunks of the rock. Jon Burgess’s feet are in the background.
The rock was so heavy, Jon and Ben Wigham had to use a hand cart to carry
it to the lab where we process rock samples. Note the brownish coating of
manganese around some of the glass. Based solely on how it looks, this rock
is definitely not 18 months old. It probably formed tens to hundreds of years
ago.
