PJ Bernard is holding the optical fiber that transmits all the data from the DSL-120 sonar or Argo II system when they are being towed near the seafloor. The data have to be sent up the cable from the vehicle to the ship, through the rest of the 11,000 meters of cable that is still wound on the winch, and into the Control Van. There we see the sonar images or pictures of the seafloor. It is amazing to think of all that information being transmitted on such a tiny thread of glass!
