Argo II is lowered over the stern of R/V Melville for the first time on this expedition. Even though the weather is terrific and the seas are calm, we are still on a ship that rolls gently. Argo II weighs over 6000 pounds and so it has to be very carefully controlled when it is lifted off the deck so that it does not start swinging and cause damage. To do this, several people tend “safety lines” that are attached to the frame of Argo II to keep it steady. In this photo, Argo II is safely lowered over the side, and Rob Palomares (left) and Ron Comer continue to tend their safety lines while Randy Dickau is removing another of the safety lines .
