Curriculum Standards: How Dive & Discover Can Help You and Your Students

Following a Dive & Discover expedition with your students helps you meet curriculum standards while giving your class a close-up look at real scientific research—all wrapped up in the adventure of an expedition on the high seas!

Our Daily Dispatches and background materials provide excellent practice in reading and interpreting informative text, as mandated by the Common Core and other curriculum standards. Students will also encounter photos, diagrams, and short videos to interpret and learn from.

Every Dive & Discover mission includes material relevant to most of the Crosscutting Concepts and Practices specified in the Next Generation Science Standards. These include The Nature of Science; Interdependence of Science, Engineering, and Technology; and the full range of Practices concerned with asking questions, defining problems, planning and carrying out investigations, and devising explanations. Engineering features prominently in our expeditions, as the researchers use a variety of vehicles, robots, and instruments to help answer scientific questions.

In addition, our dispatches highlight unusual jobs that students probably weren’t aware of before—a boon to teachers and counselors trying to advise students regarding careers and educational opportunities.

Finally, take advantage of our Mail Buoy, where your students can have their questions answered directly by a scientist, engineer, or member of the ship’s crew.
