Watery Words
April 27, 2001
Thanks to everyone who wrote poems, songs and stories for Dive and Discovers Watery Words. We received writings from second grade students, junior high school students and even scientists, technicians and crew members on Knorr. We will post two poems a day for the next three days so you can enjoy them too.
Crabs and Mussels
By Nicole W., Age 13, Clarke Middle School, Lexington MA
Crabby crabs and mussled mussels
Crawling and munching.
Searching,
Watching,
Finding,
Seeing.
Everythings here.
Everythings there.
Wheres the net?
What did I get?
Oh·,
Just Crabby Crabs.
Heres some more!
We caught some·
Clams?
Oysters?
No!
Theyre Mussled Mussels!
Vent Odyssey
By Mark Bokenfohr, ROV Jason Pilot, RV Knorr
Shadows cast in eerie depths
Seek a life unseen
Searching where no human eyes
Have ever seen or been.
Soft words and seeking interest
Guide our efforts keen
Encircling, sampling, gathering
Focused on the scene.
A balance struck, but chancy
Keeps us tight and lean
In service of our science
United, strong, a team.

Underwater
By Emily Toomey, Grade 2, Joseph Osgood Elementary School, Cohasset MA
I wish I could see you across the sea,
In the wet glassy water
Very big and wavy.
Is it green? Is it blue?
I wish that I were there, too!
I bet it is cool like a big water pool!
White little shrimp and a big ferocious shark,
They all give my brain a little spark!
Oh, how I wish I could be there with you,
In the deep salty sea in the water of blue!
Moonlight on the Knorr
A song by C. Sellers, Data Archivist, RV Knorr
Moonlight on the Knorr
Rolling through the sea
Clouds lit up like day
Stars are hard to see
Nothing but ocean wherever we roam
And the moonlight on the Knorr has me longing for home
Sunlight on the Knorr
Sparkling on the sea
Clouds are all around
None are over me
I watch a seabird dive into the foam
And the sunlight on the Knorr has me longing for home
Starlight on the Knorr
Shining on the sea
Heavens up above
Beckoning to me
Meteor shower inspires a poem
And the starlight on the Knorr has me longing for home

I taste good clams
I know that the sea is beautiful!

Ocean
By Scott Wilson and Patrick Dunn, Grade 2, Joseph Osgood Elementary School, Cohasset MA
Ocean
Dark, romantic
Rough, rocky
Fishing, boating, discovering
Crashing, boiling,
Beautiful, cool, rocky, salty
Wet, calm
Sea
Blue
Ocean

Ocean
Dark, gloomy
Waving, crashing, bumping
Scared, blessed, amazed, wet
Beautiful
