Two views of a slab of pillow basalt recovered
on Dredge 22A from the submarine east rift of Genovesa Island. In
the top view, note the shiny glassy crust that forms immediately
when the lava is erupted on the seafloor. In the bottom view, note
the small holes, called vesicles, that form during the eruption
as the gases in the magma escape.
