Greg Kurras and Paul Johnson set up a computer database that lets scientists compare pictures of the seafloor (previously collected) with sidescan sonar “images” of the seafloor (which will be collected starting tomorrow). By matching sonar signals with actual pictures, they will be able to see how the sonar can detect different types of lava terrain.
