The density experiment is completed and Brennan can see how dense the pellets are by seeing which layer they have settled to.

Brennan then makes water layers with successively lesser densities of sugar and uses different food colorings to identify them. He very carefully pours lighter layers on top of heavier ones, in a stack. The water layers don’t mix because they have different densities.
